Location: Leh, India

Leh, a high-altitude city in northern India, is nestled in the mountains of the Ladakh region at over 11,000 feet. It is known for its stunning landscapes, including barren deserts, snow-capped peaks, and ancient Buddhist monasteries. Leh serves as a gateway to adventurous activities such as trekking, river rafting, and exploring the scenic Indus Valley and nearby high-altitude passes.

Temperature & Rainfall:

In July, Leh experiences warm daytime temperatures, typically ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). However, nights remain cool, with temperatures dropping to around 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F).

Leh experiences very little rainfall in July, with average precipitation around 15-20 mm (0.6-0.8 inches). The region is in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, so it remains mostly dry even during the monsoon season.

Sample Itinerary

Time Zone in India (GMT+5:30)

  • When flying to Leh, you'll typically lose a day

  • If you depart Chicago on a Monday evening, you arrive in Delhi on Wednesday early morning and then fly to Leh, arriving Wednesday late morning/afternoon

  • On the return trip, you often gain time and arrive  the same day in the afternoon

Travel, Meals, and Lodging:

Travel Information:

Flying to Leh (IXL) from Delhi (DEL) can be an exciting yet challenging journey, especially given Leh's high altitude and remote location in the Himalayas.

Here's a breakdown of key points for your travel:

  • Flights Between Delhi and Leh:
    • The most cost-effective option is often to book separate flights, one into Delhi and another from Delhi to Leh.
    • Airlines: Air India, Vistara, IndiGo and others. Make sure the flight from Delhi to Leh departs from Terminal

  • Acclimatization: Leh sits at over 11,000 feet (3,500 meters), so arriving a few days early can help you adjust to the altitude. This also provides a buffer in case of travel delays.

  • Taxi from Airport: Taxis are readily available at the Leh airport, with fixed prices ranging from $5 to $15, depending on the vehicle size.

Meals

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner during the course are provided, including dinner the night before course starts. Also, breakfast is included with most accommodations in Leh.
